Premarital Financial Counseling: Why is money not discussed as much before marriage?
I had the pleasure of being interviewed today on Flyy, Fabulous and Female radio with host, Jamie Fleming today. She began with a great premarital financial counseling question "Why is money not discussed as much before marriage"? We are all aware that money is one of the top reasons for divorce, yet even 2012 it remains somewhat taboo.
Answer: Money is not discussed for several reasons:
(1) There's a fear of if I share my financial mistakes or behavior with the one I love, they are going to break off the wedding. They feel as if they have let that person down and instead of creating that atmosphere, they prefer to remain silent. Incidentally, once they are married and this information is shared it could lead the person to feel as if they were deceived by the love of their life.
(2) People are proud. I shared with her when I was growing up we were taught you don't tell someone about your personal issues. The problem with remaining quiet is while you are not sharing that you have some financial issues, the vicious cycle of money mismanagement continues and sometimes you get further in debt than if you had spoke up.
(3) Being engaged is a happy time and money is a 'downer' topic so we don't want to come down off of our being in love high to discuss a negative topic. Money is not a negative topic. It's how people have handled money that causes it to be a negative in their life. There's a lot money can do if you manage it, instead of being managed by it.
