Premarital Financial Counseling: If the bride nor groom has debt, do you still talk money?
This is a great premarital financial counseling topic - If the bride nor groom have debt, do you still need to have the money talk? Of course you do because talking about money is not just about debt. What brides and grooms need to realize starting the conversation about money is so that you can both find out what each other thinks about money, what you would like to see happen for different situations when it concerns money and plan for your future. Money talk does not have to be a negative conversation. Quite the contrary, for those engaged couples in the example of not having debt you get the opportunity to plan without financial stress or strain. You can literally sit down and say this is what our goal is and what are the steps we must take to accomplish it. Then you begin working it. Just because there's no debt, doesn't mean you may not have to build up your credit. I remember when my husband and I had cleaned up our credit, the next step was to build the good credit. Yes, there is such a thing as not having enough good credit because the credit rating is based on history. What is the time frame that you've had good credit? Take this opportunity to even share how you didn't fall into the trap of debt and make sure that you continue it throughout your marriage.
